When it comes to selecting roofing materials for homes in Upland, California, and the surrounding Inland Empire area, concrete and clay tiles are two of the most popular choices. Their longevity, durability, and aesthetic appeal have made them preferred options for homeowners looking to invest in high-quality roofing. This article provides a comprehensive comparison of both materials, helping you make an informed decision for your roofing project.
Concrete tiles are a versatile and cost-effective choice for many homeowners. They are made from a mixture of sand, cement, and water, which is then molded under heat and high pressure.
Durability and Longevity:
Concrete tiles are exceptionally durable and can last up to 50 years or more with proper maintenance. They are resistant to damage from hail, wind, and fire.
Variety and Aesthetics:
Concrete tiles are available in a wide range of colors, styles, and finishes. They can be designed to mimic the look of traditional clay tiles, wood shake, slate, and even stone.
Cost:
Concrete tiles are generally less expensive than clay tiles, making them an attractive option for homeowners on a budget. However, they are heavier, which may require additional structural support and increase installation costs.
Maintenance:
Concrete tiles require minimal maintenance. However, they can absorb water over time, which may lead to mildew and staining. Sealing can help to mitigate this issue.
Clay tiles are a classic choice known for their distinctive and timeless beauty. They are made by baking molded clay, which can be glazed or unglazed to achieve different finishes.
Durability and Longevity:
Clay tiles are incredibly durable and can last up to 100 years or more. They are resistant to rot, insects, fire, and can handle harsh weather conditions.
Variety and Aesthetics:
Clay tiles are typically found in terracotta or red hues but can be found in a range of other colors. They can add an elegant, Mediterranean charm to any home.
Cost:
Clay tiles tend to be more expensive than concrete tiles. However, their longevity and low maintenance needs often make them a worthwhile investment in the long run.
Maintenance:
Clay tiles require little maintenance. They do not absorb water, which means they resist mildew and staining. However, they are more fragile than concrete tiles and can crack under pressure or impact.
Climate Compatibility:
Both concrete and clay tiles are suitable for the Southern Californian climate. They are excellent at reflecting heat, making them energy-efficient choices for warm weather. However, clay tiles have the edge in coastal areas as they resist salt spray better than concrete.
Weight:
Both tile types are heavier than materials like asphalt shingles. You'll need to ensure your home's structure can support their weight.
Color Retention:
Over time, the color of concrete tiles can fade. In contrast, the color of clay tiles is fired into the material, resulting in exceptional color retention.
Environmental Impact:
Both clay and concrete tiles are environmentally friendly roofing choices. They are made from natural materials and can be recycled at the end of their lifespan.
Insurance Costs:
Given their durability and longevity, some insurance companies may offer discounts on homes with clay or concrete tile roofs.
Both concrete and clay tiles are excellent choices for residential roofing in Upland, California, offering significant benefits in terms of durability, longevity, and aesthetic appeal. Your choice between the two will depend on your personal preferences, budget, and the specific needs of your home. They have the necessary expertise, equipment, and training to carry out the job safely and effectively. An experienced roofing contractor can correctly assess your roof's condition, recommend the most suitable materials for your needs, and perform the installation to industry standards, ensuring your roof's longevity and durability.
A few tips for hiring the right contractor include checking their credentials, verifying their insurance, asking for references, and getting a detailed written estimate.
The cost of re-roofing varies depending on factors such as the size and pitch of your roof, the type of materials chosen, and the rates of your contractor. It's a significant investment, so it's essential to plan your budget carefully. While it's tempting to opt for the lowest quote, remember that quality work and materials will save you money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent repairs or premature replacement.
Before the re-roofing project begins, there are a few steps you can take to prepare:
Clear the area around your home: Remove vehicles, furniture, and other items from around your home's perimeter to prevent them from being damaged by falling debris.
Protect items in your attic: Dust and debris may fall into your attic during re-roofing. Cover or remove items to protect them.
Inform your neighbors: Let your neighbors know about your re-roofing project in advance so they can prepare for any noise or minor disruptions.

Amazing Roofer
Anthony is an amazing roofer. Took the time to explain what he was doing and why it was important. I had a pretty high-sloped roof since I own a Victorian house. He had all of his guys on safety equipment. He was working on the roof and I would be away at work. My next door neighbor came to talk to him and later told me that he is doing a great job so it’s always good to get someone else’s point of view. The best part is when Anthony finished, he cleaned up old nails and all of the debris! Would hire again!
