In the world of home repairs and renovations, roofing is an essential sector. A well-constructed roof protects our homes, keeps our families safe, and preserves the integrity of our buildings. But as with any industry, roofing has its darker side, including scams that can trick unsuspecting homeowners and cause significant financial harm. This article aims to bring these fraudulent practices to light and equip residents of Upland, California, with the knowledge to protect themselves.
Roofing scams can take on various forms, but they often share a few common characteristics. Scammers typically target vulnerable homeowners - often seniors or those with visible roof damage. Some might be opportunistic, preying on homeowners after major storms or other natural disasters. Others operate as seemingly legitimate businesses, providing subpar services at inflated costs.
1. The Storm Chaser: These scammers arrive unannounced at your door after a significant weather event, offering to repair any damage. While it might seem like a godsend at a stressful time, storm chasers typically perform shoddy work, use inferior materials, or simply take your money and disappear.
2. The Inadequate Repairs: This type of scam involves contractors who provide inferior or incomplete services. They might replace a few shingles, apply some sealant, and assure you the problem is solved while failing to address the underlying issues.
3. The Price Surge: This scam starts with a surprisingly low estimate. But once work begins, the contractor claims they've discovered additional problems, and the price unexpectedly surges. You're left with an inflated bill and often, a roof that's no better off than before.
While these scams are troubling, knowledge is your best defense. By being aware of these tactics and taking some simple precautions, you can protect yourself and your investment.
1. Do Your Homework:
Before hiring any contractor, conduct thorough research. Check online reviews, ask for references, and ensure the contractor has a physical location in Upland or the surrounding areas.
2. Verify Licenses and Insurance:
A legitimate roofing contractor in California should have a valid license and insurance to protect you from liability. Always ask to see these documents and verify them with the relevant authorities.
3. Get Multiple Estimates:
A standard best practice is to get estimates from at least three different contractors. This gives you a clear picture of the costs involved and allows you to identify any estimates that seem suspiciously low.
4. Understand the Contract:
Never sign a contract you don't fully understand. Ensure it includes a detailed description of the work, the cost, the timeline, and any warranties. If anything seems unclear, ask for clarification.
5. Beware of Red Flags:
Be cautious of contractors who use high-pressure sales tactics, ask for payment upfront, or refuse to offer a warranty. These are clear warning signs of a potential scam.
In conclusion, while roofing scams are unfortunately a reality in Upland and other communities, you can protect yourself by staying informed, being cautious, and making informed decisions. As the saying goes, "Forewarned is forearmed." Be smart, stay safe, and protect your home.

Can't Say Enough
I can't say enough about Seeburger and Sons Roofing. Anthony was very professional, polite and punctual young man. He explained fully and clearly everthing that needed to be done to repair my roof. He listened to any questions or suggestions I might have presented to him. He was punctual and would let me know ahead of time if his schedule changed. I would most definitely recommend him to anyone needing roof repair.

Amazing Roofer
Anthony is an amazing roofer. Took the time to explain what he was doing and why it was important. I had a pretty high-sloped roof since I own a Victorian house. He had all of his guys on safety equipment. He was working on the roof and I would be away at work. My next door neighbor came to talk to him and later told me that he is doing a great job so it’s always good to get someone else’s point of view. The best part is when Anthony finished, he cleaned up old nails and all of the debris! Would hire again!
